Hiking

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, is a renowned Kenyan conservation organization best known for its pioneering elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation program. Based in Nairobi National Park, their mission is to protect wildlife and habitats through a four-pillar approach: rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants (with over 300 successfully released); running anti-poaching teams and aerial surveillance; operating mobile veterinary units; and supporting local communities with water and education. They rely on public donations, most famously through their “Adopt an Orphan” program, which allows people worldwide to support the care of specific elephants until they are eventually reintegrated into the wild

Rules to Observe

  • Keep your voice down: Loud noises and sudden movements scare the young elephants.

  • Stay behind the rope barrier: Do not cross into the area where the orphans are moving and feeding.

  • No smoking: The entire nursery area is strictly non-smoking.

  • Follow your guide’s instructions: Keepers and staff are managing the herd; always listen to their directions.

  • Keep the path clear: Do not block the route the elephants use to walk to their mud bath area.
